Booster
The
Jefferson High School BOOSTER originated in 1913 and is currently one
of the oldest student-run newspapers in the state. Originally, the
BOOSTER newspaper was named the Monitor, before the name was changed to its current name in 1923. A quote from the Nov. 5, 1915, issue of the Monitor said,
“Copies of the Monitor have been sent as far as Washington D.C.,
Asheville, N.C., and Bade City, Fla. And yet some have the nerve to ask,
‘Why is a high school paper necessary?’ ” The BOOSTER newspaper is a
student-funded newspaper, which is self-sufficient economically in terms
of printing costs. The newspaper has a rich history of advisors, most
notably C.J. Hopkins, who worked at the Journal and Courier,
coached the last Jefferson High School State Championship Tennis Team,
was beloved by all his students, and advised the paper from 1949 to
1974. In 1986, Charles Herber began advising The
BOOSTER, and has led the paper to receiving national acclaim and distributed it as far as California and Florida. In 2014, The
BOOSTER was sent to Ireland for a subscription and is now an
internationally acclaimed newspaper. For the past 12 years the
Booster has won first place in national critical evaluations. The awards
range from American Scholastic Press Association (Most Outstanding
High School Newspaper in the nation for the past two years) to Quill and
Scroll, the International High School Press Association (International
First Place Award). For the past two years, the American Scholastic
Press Association awarded the BOOSTER not only the First Place With
Special Merit award, but also Most Outstanding High School Newspaper for
2011-2012 and 2012-2013. In this competition, the BOOSTER was the only
paper across the nation to receive this award based on schools the size
of Jeff with approximately 1,700 to 2,200 students. To receive the
award twice in a row is a remarkable achievement. The BOOSTER is proud
to celebrate 101 years of publication featuring hundreds of writers,
dozens of editors, several advisers, and one unique publication.
